Golf Car Catalog offers TOW / RUN switches for Club Car, EZGO, and Yamaha brand golf carts, utility vehicles, and personnel carriers. TOW / RUN switches are basically kill switches designed to disable the golf cart. there are several reasons for this switch.
Usually, a TOW / RUN switch is only used on electric golf carts, specifically those with a separately excited electrical system with regenerative braking. They are not needed with electric golf carts with a series wound electrical system. If you have a toggle style forward and reverse switch plus a TOW / RUN switch, you have a separately excited electrical system.
The first purpose for this switch is to disable the controller when the golf cart is in storage. Any golf cart with a separately excited electrical system has a controller with logic memory similar to that in the presets on your stereo. By employing this logic memory, the cart draws power even when at rest. It is a small amount and not noticeable unless the cart sits for long periods of time. Flipping the switch from RUN to TOW kills this memory temporarily to prevent power loss. The second purpose is for towing as the name implies. If your golf cart breaks down and needs to be towed, you must flip the switch form RUN to TOW also, or you can cause serious damage to your motor, controller or both.
