This is the entire steering box assembly for all Golf Carts & all WorkHorse 800, 1000 & 1200 series utility trucks including Cushman Commander 280, 2100 & 2200 models and Jacobsen 1110 Hauler (gas) & 1110 E Hauler (electric) with the new style steering. This steering box will NOT fit any WorkHorse ST-350 or ST-480 big wheel trucks, the Clays Car, the Cushman Commander 4800 or any golf cars or small utility trucks prior to 2001. This steering system is easy to identify because the entire cast aluminum steering box is located on top of the front axle. All you see from inside the car is the column, which is attached at the floorboard with 4 bolts.
Factory Part #: 70964-G01 (new), Replaced 70602-G01 (old)
Note 1: The cast aluminum steering box and the passenger side spindle is subject to breaking if the front end is hit hard enough. Sometimes the break is obvious because steering is impossible. Other times a mounting hole may break and the steering box gets loose on the axle and causes sloppy steering. For safety sake it is recommended that the box NOT be rewelded.
Note 2: As of August 13, 2002, a new and improved steering box, with beefed up mount holes in a slightly different pattern, became standard and the old box went away. If you have the old box and need to order a new one, be prepared to drill a 7/16" hole in the original front axle to accommodate the new steering box. This is not an easy task as it is a rather large hole and the axle is about 1/4" thick. The new box will come with a template to help locate the new hole position.
Note 3: Loose or sloppy steering can cause wandering and unexpected darting as the car is driven down a narrow straightaway. This condition may be caused by worn tie rod ends, king pins or leaf springs, improper front end alignment (yes, golf car front ends need to be properly aligned just like your automobile) or low tire pressure.
This is a 4 Hole Steering Box complete with the internal gears and an integral tie rod & end that attaches to the the passenger side spindle assembly. If you need other parts you can find them, with written descriptions, elsewhere in this section.
